Being a training practice means the practice has been accredited by Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery as being suitable for the training of junior doctors including those intending to become General Practitioners.

We supervise doctors at different stages in their training but they are all fully qualified doctors.

  • Foundation (‘F2’) doctors are in their 2nd year following graduation from Medical School and have 1-2 years of experience, mainly in the hospital setting.

  • Specialist GP Trainee (‘ST’) doctors are more experienced and have been selected for GP training and future general practice. They are also known as GP ‘Registrars’ and may be in their 1st, 2nd or 3rd (final) year of GP training.

  • The final year specialist trainees usually stay with us for a full year; the other trainee doctors stay for 4 months.

The practice and doctors have had to achieve a number of standards which have been assessed by the GP Deanery for Kent, Surrey and Sussex, acting on behalf of the national organisation (the Post Graduate Medical Education Board).

If you are seeing a trainee doctor you can expect to receive the quality of service you would from your own GP. If you have any concerns please mention this to a member of staff.
In order for the GP trainee to successfully complete their training they need to be assessed on their consulting skills. This is done by the appointed assessors viewing a video of the trainee’s consultations. You may be asked for your permission to have your consultation recorded in this way. If you agree, you will need to give your written permission and there is a consent form available at the desk, which you will be offered. If the doctor appears to be recording your consultation and you have not signed a consent form, then you should indicate this to him or her immediately. The recording will be used for educational purposes only. Further information about this process and the confidentiality of it, can be obtained from the reception staff.

We also host undergraduate medical students from Brighton & Sussex Medical School. GP placements are a valuable part of medical training. These students are NOT qualified doctors but may see you (with your consent) under the direct supervision of one of our senior GPs.
